Coriander is a spice produced from the round seeds of the coriander (Coriandrum sativum). India is the largest producer of coriander (70%). Other major producers are Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Iran, Morocco, Canada and Australia. In India, Rajasthan is the largest producer, followed by Mp and Gujarat. India is also the largest exporter of coriander seeds. It is used to treat stomach related ailments and eases digestion, effective treatment for skin ailments like eczema, itchy skin, rashes and inflammation, mouth ulcers and sores. It also helps control diabetes, facilitates hair growth, controls cholesterol, prevents menstrual irregularities and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The seeds are a rich source of vitamins and minerals. They are used in curry powder, curries, pickles, sambhar and rasam, brewing certain varieties of beer. The essential oil extracted from seeds is used as a dietary supplement and herbal remedy. The oil is used as a flavoring agent in tobacco, gin and liquor.
